ABOUT BRUCE

Dr. Bruce Banner is many things. He's one of the foremost minds in the field of Nuclear Physics. A Certified Genius. A Cautionary Tale. Sometimes, he's even an Avenger. For whatever that's worth...Brilliant as he is, Bruce is also defined by a single moment in his life. That moment when he was caught in the fallout of his own experiments on Gamma Radiation (and an otherwise classified sample of the Super Soldier Serum). The moment when Banner became The Hulk. Now, Bruce lives his life like a carefully balanced house of cards. He keeps to himself, lays low and avoids stressors (...well, as best he can). He stays several steps ahead of those who would wish to use him as a weapon. And above all, he keeps trying, every day, to put Good into the world. To balance out the destruction his Other Half's rage leaves behind.

PERSONALITY

Bruce is generally a quiet-spoken and seemingly reflective individual. He dislikes performative emotions, and often struggles with his own long-established instinct to disassociate from others. Though he speaks of being 'always angry,' Banner also maintains an ironclad control over his emotions, and will rarely ever present himself as upset or angry in mixed company. The exception is, of course, when he is The Hulk. When he's comfortable around someone, Bruce reveals an incredibly dry wit and ruthless sense of humor. He's easily entertained by discussions of science and social change. But his moods are mercurial. And since Bruce has a large number of unacknowledged triggers as a result to repeated abuse and trauma in his life, even his close friends cannot be entirely anticipate a shift in mood or a sudden withdrawal.

SKILL & PROFICIENCIES

BRUCE BANNER

  • Hyper-Intelligent: Bruce is a documented genius in his select field of Nuclear Physics. He’s considered by the Intelligencia to be one of the eight smartest minds on the planet (alongside Reed Richards, Tony Stark, Hank Pym, and Doctor Doom). In addition to his focus on Gamma Radiation, he also excels in technology development, cellular genetics manipulation, and combat strategy.

  • Scientist: In his lifetime, Bruce has maintained a career or expertise in a number of fields, including: Nuclear Physicist, Research Scientist, Gamma Radiology Expert, Field Medic, and Avenger Teammember.

  • Self Controlled: Bruce’s management of his emotions and adrenaline spikes allow him a measure of control over his alter-ego, an effect that sometimes grants the Hulk the ability to reason.

  • Survival Instinct: Physically, Banner is as vulnerable as any other ordinary human. However, when attacked, his instincts will trigger his adrenaline, which will cause him to transform into The Hulk.

THE HULK

  • Alpha-Class Strength & Durability: The Hulk is considered to be one of the most powerful beings in the known universe, with a strength and invulnerability that exponentially increases along with his rage. The Hulk’s power is contingent upon spikes of adrenaline in his system. When primarily calm, he is said to be able to lift approx 100 tons. Conversely, his increased anger has given him the strength to destroy mountains, crush aircraft carriers, support the weight of the continents during a tectonic shift, even obliterate a planet in the dark dimension. Other abilities he has demonstrated include:

  • Superhuman Stamina

  • Superhuman Speed

  • Regenerative Healing Factor

  • Suspended Aging

  • Immunity to Disease and Illness

  • Adaptability to Hostile Environments

  • Resistance to Psychic Attack

  • Self Replication of Gamma Energy/Radiation

  • Vulnerabilities: Hulk’s skin can be harmed by metals such as Adamantium and Vibranium, but in order to pierce his flesh a significant amount of force must be applied. His healing factor typically negates any damage done to his body, and his additional anger at the attack leads to increased resilience. The Hulk can be knocked out using gas, but it takes a great deal of gas.

HISTORY & TIMELINE

__PRE-HULK
__
Robert Bruce Banner was born into a family marked by both intellectual brilliance and physical abuse. His father (Brian Banner) was an admired astrophysicist and genius in his own right, but he mistrusted Bruce’s youthful intelligence and resented the attention his son received from Becky, Bruce’s mother. As a raging alcoholic, Brian regularly beat his wife and emotionally abused both her and Bruce. His lack of control reached a breaking point when he eventually murdered Becky before young Bruce’s eyes. This lifestyle of helplessness and internalized, poorly bottled rage would not only make Bruce an outcast as a child, but would also shape the man he later became alongside the Hulk persona.
With his father imprisoned in a mental institution, Bruce was sent to live with his Aunt Susan, who cared for him until his graduation from Science High School. His traumatic experiences and withdrawn nature made him the target of ridicule from the other children, so Bruce spent much of his time alone. His above average intellect gained him entry into Desert State University, and later the California Institute of Technology as he pursued a Doctorate in Nuclear Physics. His work in the field (and his obvious genius) set him apart from his fellow students, soon catching the eye of the American military.Bruce obtained employment in the military at Desert Base, where he worked for General “Thunderbolt” Ross and met the singular Betty Ross - a woman he would eventually fall in love with. During his time working for Thunderbolt, Bruce designed a “Gamma-Bomb” utilizing Gamma Radiation as a focused and localized weapon. This bomb incorporated elements drawn from the Super Solder Project that had produced Captain America, formula compounds which General Ross had convinced Banner to work on using subterfuge.* When the day for testing of the bomb arrived, Bruce witnessed with horror as a young teenager (Rick Jones) snuck onto the testing field seconds before the weapon was set to detonate. Bruce risked himself to save the teen, but was too late to escape the brunt the explosion himself, or the Gamma Radiation that attacked his biological makeup and turned him into a massive, incoherent monster known as The Hulk.AFTER THE INCIDENTMore Information To Be Added

HEADCANON

UNIVERSES & TIMESTAMPS

(Main Verse) Unless indicated otherwise, Bruce's adventures & encounters default into this standard verse. It is a blended-canon verse that incorporates the events of the Avengers (& related) films with Earth-616 in Marvel Comics. Interactions may encompass any point in which Bruce is connected to the Avenger's team, and may include crossover characters.

(Planet Hulk Verse) This Alternate Universe takes place on Sakaar (not the version in Thor: Ragnarok, the version from the Planet Hulk comic series). Hulk has risen victorious in the Gladiatorial Arena and escaped with his Warbound. Events in this verse may include Holku defeating the traitorous Red King to become the new ruler of Sakaar, any interactions with Caiera The Oldstrong, and the destruction of the Capital.

(Marvel Comics 616 Verse) In this Secondary Main Verse, Earth-616 Bruce is an amalgamation of Banner in Avengers and Hulk Titles such as: Indestructible Hulk, Avengers Assemble, Marvel Now! Avengers, Avengers World, and Avengers: Infinity Arc. Earth-616 Bruce is a more cynical version of the character, with a great deal more self loathing and resentment than his movie counterpart. He will often seem harsh, defensive, and may behave like he has something to prove to the world.
